Benchtop Models to Support Medical Device and Pharmaceutical Invention and Commercialization

Scope

FDA has recognized the ever-growing need to reduce costs in inventing and commercializing medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery by using benchtop physiological models rather than animal models. Benchtop models can be used in invention (feasibility) as well as commercialization (verification and validation testing). Some examples of benchtop models include rapid prototype mechanical models, microfluidic and tissue-on-a-chip systems, computational models, and flow loops, but the opportunities are limitless, as these models become solutions to roadblocks in invention and commercialization. In order for these benchtop models to be accepted by the field, they must be predictive of the current gold standards of pre-clinical and clinical validation methods.
